I am an original because my hair is the kind that makes the ladies straight from the motherland cringe when I take out my braids.After 12 years of perming I decided to cut it all off, tried an Afro and now I’m growing it back.I would be even more of an original with one of those clips…
it seems that to wear my hair in its natural state {iam loc’d) is taboo but perms and weaves are accepted more than the hair God gave us. how about that? that makes me original.
I am an original because there are no other TT’s like me. I rock my style in a corporate, redneck environment, something that so many of my friends say that they envy me for because they, “just couldn’t do it.” So many of my friends tried to get me to straighten my hair out before my last interview, but I rocked it. I feel that my strength is in my hair and that the curly fro that God has blessed me with gives me the confidence that I have. I am like Samson, so just call me Samsona 🙂

my hair, of course. i am on my second set of locs. this time i collaborated with my stylist and said ‘make every nap a loc’. they twist and twirl and spring about and loced so fast this time! i am truly having a lurve affair with my spongy coils and i adorn them with every sparkly interesting clip i can find at CVS and Walgreens.

It’s funny because I was thinking about this topic last night. A lady asked me why I didn’t wear my hair straight and then she said I looked better with straight hair.I was hurt inside but I tried to calmly explain to her that this is my natural hair and in my world its beautiful. I felt like I was the only one in her world with natural kinky hair and I felt insecure. Then I realized that this is the way god wanted me to be and I shouldn’t be ashamed. I should be proud that I’m different from the rest. I’m original because I can independently decide on how I want to wear my hair.
The hair clip and the model’s hair are both beautiful.
Individually, we’re all original and I love that. We may have similar textures, coils, and kinks, but no two heads of hair are “exactly” the same.

I’m original because no one can stop me from being me. Not even my parents who tried to threaten me to stop being natural by telling me I can either perm my hair or straighten it. *I* decided to cut down my afro to a TWA(teenie weenie afro) and I plan to keep it that way until I can move out.

I’m original because I’m not afraid to wear my hair in it’s natural state no matter the situation. I work in a manufacturing/corporate environment, and I still rock a frohawk and twists. I think that my hair, while an extension of me, does not define me. I, like India.Aire, am not my hair….

Originality is all about breaking the shackles and stepping out of the shadows. Living the you that feels the most true and honest. Originality cannot be bought or sold, copyrighted or criticized. It is what others see when you think they aren’t looking.
I’m an orginal because I am part of a community of women (and men) who put their beautiful orginal talents out there to make the world better. And example of the amazingly original community to which I am blessed to belong. Last year, I put a call out that I would auction off a manuscript critique to raise money to aid the victims of the Dunbar Village tragedy. Within three days, dozens of artists, writers and publishers volunteered their original services. I wrote up descriptions, and put them up on ebay. Over 100 people bid and we raised thousands of dollars… originally.
We all came together and said, “This is my personally original talent, gift or skill. How can I use it to help?”

What Makes Me Original?
Before responding to this question, I thought, hey let’s see what Webster’s dictionary refers to as ‘original’. It uses words like: first, new, creative, and source for copies as bold meanings for ‘original’.
My favorite quote, which I’ve mentioned a few times in the past, is by William Shakespeare- Hamlet: “to thine own self be true” God is number 1 in my life and affectionately my son knows he’s number 1.5 in my life. 🙂 I strive to be best my mom, daughter, sister, and friend every day. Putting everything in order to keep stress at a minimum. I’m always changing my hair and style to suit me. I don’t look to others for approval because I know that I’m beautiful in God’s eyes. When I did my big chop, there was a nameless group of women, which kept me, number one on their gossip list. Their attitude was like water rolling off my back. However, recently I noticed a few of them transitioning.
So proudly I say that I’m original in this way — FIRST: I’m true to myself and my life is in order. NEW/CREATIVE: I keep myself fresh by constantly changing my style to suit me. And lately I’ve seen myself to be a SOURCE FOR COPIES.
On my originality:
We were each uniquely made, fearfully and wonderfully by the Creator.
We each have a unique set of talents and gifts provided by God,
With our own unique physical structure –
Which include a pair of unique feet
With which we walk on our own unique paths.
In our uniqueness we are the same:
We all have something that makes us distinct somehow.
But what makes me an original are not my distinguishable features,
But my ability to recognize just what makes me distinct,
My love for my individual character and
My respect and admiration for the diversity of others.
Im original because I teach individuality to my beautiful sisters in everything i do.
There’s no arguing that the best way to learn something is to put it into practice. And when it comes to encouraging originality, I lead by example.
Everyday ones individuality is tested. It seems like everyone yearns to be like everyone else! I had hoped it was just because of my age and environment. That as I grow older, I would encounter more people willing to express themselves openly without fearing being judged by others.
Sadly, some people still would rather play it safe, and they in turn give up all opportunities to be innovative and ‘fresh’. However, I do enjoy making sure that my sisters understand that the time we have on this earth is precious. And its better to use that time by standing out and being original, than foolishly following the crowd.

I’m an original because I’ve come to realize that the best way to truly love yourself is through your own unique expression. Over the years I’ve tapped into expressing myself more by making my own floral hair decorations, my own scarves, concocting different little styles, and recently getting natural bellas on youtube to get creative and truly see the beauty in our hair. I’ve even sold crochet earrings on fotki.com in the past! I started my natural hair channel because I often got asked about my hair while out and about and I felt like others weren’t inspired enough to explore their own natural texture. I’m an orginal because my self expression and self love shine through and others can’t help but pause and notice it. I choose to educate and celebrate at the same time 🙂
Unlike India.Aire, I am my hair. After years of fighting my natural hair and my true nature with pressing combs and relaxers, I am flaunting a delicious afro everyday at work. I walk the halls of my highschool proudly showing teenagers that they too can be proud of who they are. They do not have to be what society dictates, they can be their true selves–an original. Just like me and my hair.

Jaws drop, eyebrows raise, and heads turn when I enter a room. I’m an original because I disrupt people’s notions of categorical identities (i.e. black, liberal, conservative, afrocentric, preppy, etc.). My (life)style merges seemingly separate worlds in ways that onlookers have yet to fully comprehend. I’d like to thank my bicultural upbringing for that (Black American and West African). Naysayers are quick to point out the so-called inconsistencies in the way I carry myself. “Cornrows and Chanel don’t mix†they say! “Kinks and Khakis? No way!†Never one to allow an opportunity to (re)educate slip away, I politely inform them that nothing about me is in disarray. Instead, I just redefine “afrocentric†or “chic†or “conservative†in ways that are foreign to some. And just for good measure I tell them not to worry. In due time, it’ll make sense.
