Afrobellas are strong, afrobellas are intelligent, afrobellas are stylish and creative. And some of the members of this beautiful community have let me know about the amazingly cool products they’re working on. So lemme tell you what your fellow bellas are up to!
Ceecee is a regular commenter who’s always got insight to share, and she’s also part of an art & graphic design collective called one3snapshot. Her collective makes some super fly tees that celebrate strong messages from artists outside the mainstream. The Frida Khalo tee is beautiful, and I really dig the Fela Kuti Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense tee, of which the tan is my personal favorite. The Speak Your Mother Tongue tee gives props to mama Africa. Most tees are $24.13 for men and women alike, but the one-offs — truly distinctive expressions in garment form can cost as much as $88 for a dress. That Nature Funk scoop neck tee is just my style. And so is that floral tote bag!
Speaking of cool bags, Tina of Laidback Home has some really cool ones! But bags aren’t her main focus. Her company, Laidback Home sells pillows in crazy graphic designs.
She’s got home furnishings that are inspired homages to hip hop culture in the form of breakdancing, boomboxes, tattoos, and vinyl LPs. Her DJ Tote is a funky, denim and vinyl fashion statement. $75 and it can be yours. Love it!
I don’t write nearly enough posts for sisters with locs. I’ve got something pretty to share with you. Thalia’s Creations is a beautiful line of hair jewelry for locs and braids, and they’ve got this wash-n-go girl jealous. I wish I could wear them too!

Thalia’s Creations are delicate and elegant — more refined than many other adornments for locs that I’ve seen. The designs come in a range of colors — seedy wood or copper stone would look gorgeous on blond or honey colored locs, and brighter designs, like turquoise nugget would look lovely on darker hair. hey Bella, thanks for the heads up on the funky fly gear and the dreadlock jewelry. one thing though, im sure you know, but not all dreadlock sistas are Rasta, so i dont think that that it’d be proper to refer to us as rastabellas. i just figure if i were Rasta i might have a problem with that. peace and light!
Storme, you’re right. Just removed the phrase altogether. Where I am from, you pretty much call everyone with locs “ras” or “dread”, and I realize here in the US, those terms have different connotations. I honestly don’t think about it enough, probs because I don’t have locs. But I do get confused — locs or locks, dreads, or not? I don’t know what term to stick to. And I didn’t mean “rastabella” to describe a religious affiliation. I’ll find a better description.
OOOh I love these tees and hair jewelry. Makes me want to start my locks. But I’ve got serious hair commitment issues. I’ll have to forward Thalia’s creations to my mom who has locks. Great post!

Since you’re doing a lot of revolutionary designers, i thought it would be neat if the big girls could take a part of your movement too. Just a suggestion. Stay up- graphic artist- we run it.

yea, its cool AfroBella 🙂 i prefer dreadlocks or locks, but clearly there’s no universal term. seems like everyone calls them some variation of the term so your guess is just as good as mine! 🙂
