Yesterday we teased you with the photo, but today you get to see the real deal!
Actress and comedienne Kim Coles has been wearing her hair in micro-braids since 1991. Before that she wore weaves. Before that, she wore her hair relaxed. But now finally she’s ready to show the world her beauty in its most natural state!
And here she is WORKING it in a tee by Minoritees and as she told me, “Rachel Stewart earrings whom I think I found on YOUR site!” YAY!
Kim explains,
“I have considered myself “natural” for 20 years because I have had no relaxer since 1991. I was not ready to be fully natural using only my own hair because I did not know what products to use. YOU TUBE was a game changer. I have watched you young-ins accept your hair and yourselves and you gave me the courage and the product knowledge to take the leap to be completely authentic… minus the color of course. Please, no judgements there! Can you say GRAY!!!”
When I spoke with her yesterday it really warmed my heart so much to hear her attribute her transition to bloggers like myself and this new generation of natural hair rockers. “It’s time! I was fully inspired by the natural hair community. You girls have been the vanguard!”
Kim made sure to explain that her new style isn’t meant to be any kind of statement, beyond a personal one.
“This is not a political statement, I will try to stay away from debating what is more ‘natural”. I am content with my description for me. Nor will I be pushing others to take the steps that I am taking. I think that you get to chose your kind of beauty. I do however want us all to be honest with ourselves as why we make the choices that we do. All of the choices… not just hair.”
I cosign that completely – and so often we can get caught up in judging or questioning the way others choose to express their ideas of beauty. Let’s leave that in 2010 where it belongs!
Kim Coles has been rocking her new short ‘do for about a week now, and she’s getting used to being a new natural woman. “I feel free and scared and excited but ready to show the outer manifestation of some inner work that I have been doing. I figured why not show the REAL authentic me. I am shifting in other areas of my life too and my hair is just the beginning of what I will begin to show the world.”
I can honestly say from having interviewed her and having met her, Kim is an amazing woman through and through and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Kim. You can keep up with her at KimColesInc.com or OpenTheGifts.com, and please show her love on her new natural hair on Twitter or Facebook!
oh and PS: she added “BTW the box of hair under my bed is the container of loose hair that I use for braiding to answer the comment on the post!” You won’t be needing that box anymore! Welcome to Team Natural, Kim!!
Frugalista
She looks beautiful and I love the color. Good scoop, Bella!
The Cubicle Chick
Kim looks fabulous and I am so glad she is embracing her natural side. I am on that journey as well, so if she can do it, so can I!
blkgrlinc
OH EMM GEE she looks amazing! Absolutely beautiful. I have like Kim Coles since IN Living Color and we both graduated from Tech (clearly I was way after her) I am glad to see her accepting her tresses and looking slamming.
Laquita

GOOOORGEOUS!!!! I was so over those micro braids! Welcome, Kim!
Sabrina
I would love to know what color that is in her hair. It is so attractive on her and we are about the same complexion. Go Kim!!
Aziza
Wow! Go Kim! She looks amazing 🙂
Moni
I love it! And I’m feeling her about the color, I’m graying also, right in the front and I’m allergic to hair dye! So rinse’s stay in my beauty cabinet!
Welcome to the club Kim!
BK
Ha! I never looked at her anything but natural because I’ve always seen her in the braids!!! Love Love Love her hair!!! the color rocks too..
NaturalReview
Kim Coles has always been beautiful and youthful, but she looks even more beautiful and younger with her new look!!
Kimmie
She looks absolutely adorable!! I liked the micros but didn’t realize how “heavy” the look was until seeing these photos. Does this woman age at all? Seriously?! Kim Coles has looked the same age for 20+ years and this looks has taken her even younger. I love it! I like that shirt too lol.
tyjomika
SHE LOOOOOOOOOKS AMAZING AND EVEN YOUNGER!
BrooklynsShoeBabe
She looks awesome, and dare I say, younger! Also, I’m so sick of natural hair being perceived as a political statement. When I went natural (no more hot comb or extensions) in 1991, I was so scared of being labelled some kind of radical. lol. I’m over that now. 🙂 Thank you for your site.
Tina
I love her hair and the color!
amberchella
It’s super cute & you can finally see her beautiful face–those cheekbones! Congrats, Kim & welcome to fabulous freedom!
Ps. I love her pov that it’s not a political statement. It’s your hair and your right to wear it as you wish.
Nina
Kim looks wonderful. Radiant. And it’s not just the hair and the attitude, it’s looks like her diet and exercise regime and being very good to her. I would love to know what she is doing.
Efuntayo
She looks FABulous! She looks so much prettier and younger without those braids weighing her down.

Thanks AFROBELLA and all the other Bellas!!!! Your comments make me smile AND giggle.
I feel great although I am NOT a fan of bedhead! Oh well, comes with the territory, huh?
By the way I had a double strand twist done at Mahogany Revolution Salon in L.A. by Dr.Kari and the base color done by Ebony was Miss Clairol Coppertone (i think) plus she plopped a little blonde up in there!
One question: How do I keep from touching my HAIR!!!! WooWooWOo!!

Luvvie
Kim better WERK!!! Showing us all that black don’t crack. She looks sooo pretty! GET EM, KiM!
Sherrie
Kim your hair look fabulous!!! Love the color too, very natural.
I completely agree with Kim and Afrobella. I’m 50 and these “young girls” have taught me a thing or two re having beautiful natural afro-textured hair. Emphasis on beautiful because most folks accept the curls if the curls are on a bi-racial person but let it be on the type “4a or 4b” types and it’s a whole ‘nother story!
After looking at a few YouTube hair videos and finding various natural hair sites and seeing all the possibilities along with some who had my textured hair. I thought wow, I CAN DO this too! I got to real curious if I still had the hair my mom told me I had as a little girl (of course, adjusted to age, etc.) I never had any experience in really working with my natural hair because as you all know, when you’re a young black girl, your first “beautician” is mom or maybe grandma and then I happily begged mom (on the advice of my now hairstylist to get a perm) so from the age of 15, I’ve only known how to style my hair in it’s relaxed state. But now that I’ve been an at-home mom for the last 4 years, I had the freedom to try a different look free from all the why’s, huh’s, etc. and I love it. I made a conscienous decision not to relax since April 2010 and after trying to do the no cut transition, decided again the do the semi big chop in August 2010 and after adjusting to my new look went in two weeks later for the final chop and I have received so many sincere compliments both from black & white friends and family (mom is natural but she was highly concerned “I was so gray” which I finally changed in Dec 2010 with Henna (my new best friend–yay)!
I’m thankful for this site because as I said I’m 50 and while I consider myself hip & cool and quite youthful looking some of the other blog sites when it comes to fashion and natural hairstyles, in my opinion, are for the 20 & 30 somethings. I look my natural look but as I always do I like classy, cool chic (can you say 40s-early 60s dressing–clothes were just too sharp back then) and some of the hairstyles and clothing are better suited for those of that age group–no offense to my young sisters but when you reach my age, you’ll understand. 😉
sandra
Beautiful!
And somebody finally gets it: stop with the judgement about hair for 2010. We can finally move on…well at least some of us.

Love the hair Kim. I love natural hair. This is something I’m teaching my daugthers (3). My oldest is 6. We live in a predominantly white town, therefore all of her friends are white. We’ve discussed hair and how her hair isn’t like her friends, but no matter she needs to embrace it. I am natural, no relaxer, but I do flat iron, but also love my wash and goes. All 3 girls have different textures and this site has helped me with maintaining all 4 of our heads, while my husband just sits back and wonders what he’s going to do once the girls get a littler older. 😉
Aisak
She looks gorgeous with this style. How cute is that? And the dye color also suits her. I am glad that she said it was her choice and she is not gonna get all uppity about being natural. Those earrings are to die for as well. Did she say she found them on your site? Off to look.
Lioness
I can’t even begin to explain how fabulous this post is! To see someone on a wider stage embrace herself and seek to be true to herself and then do it in such a way that is nothing short of beautiful. And the quotes! Absolutely correct. It’s nothing but thanks to you, you tube and other bloggers that have helped me to make that very step. In turn, I’ve been able to pass that on to my girls and others.
thanks again Bella.
Monica
She looks great.

I have testimony to share.
Kim Coles has been fine for YEEAARS. Her comedic talents only made her infinitely sexier. Thin Kim, thick Kim, I’ve always loved Kim. I wanted to be Overton for obvious reasons.
So I’m doing a fanboy dance of joy at this news. Loving the new natural Kim! I’d also like to put it out there that I wouldn’t mind being a kept man. I have a lot to offer. I also have references. ‘Sup with that May-December, boo?
maria
I love Kim Coles! She was my favorite on Living Single. I always thought she was natural. Her hair looks beautiful AND makes her look 15 years younger. You go girl!
apids
Wooh, Wooh, Wooh LOL
Looks great.
Brooklyn Girl
Absolutely beautiful Kim! What a difference. You were gorgeous before, but now…unbelievable!
I went natural about 2 months ago after transitioning for over a year. I LOVE my hair and can’t imagine going back to the chemicals, curling irons and broken ends. This look does indeed make Ms. Coles look like she’s back in her 20s. And all it took was the courage to take those scissors out and snip snip. Bravo Kim, Bravo!
lateshia
I have to say Kim looks great. Wow! I love those earrings. Nothing like a sistah that rocks her natural tresses. Beautiful!
lika b
her hair is so cute & really flatters her face. i LOVE the color. & that shirt rocks. gotta get it!
Afrochick
Can someone tell me where I can possibly find those earings and maybe that t-shirt? I’ve been searching and can’t find them.
Ashley
Kim looks absolutely beautiful and 10 years younger I love it!
JS22
WOW Kim looks fantastic. Like everyone has said, she looks younger and radiant, and happy! Reading Kim’s words it sounds like shes in my head. Exactly the same story…no relaxer, natural hair growing and growing and growing under wigs and weaves for years, but not ready to go all natural.
Yes, youtube was the game changer. Everyone I talked to told me to go to you tube for styles, products, ideas, etc and once I got there it amazed me how many young African American women were accepting and embracing their natural hair. Youtube and my girlfriends gave me the courage to come out so to speak.
I have also had to make it clear to people that my natural hair is not a statement of any kind other than “I’m trying something new”. I’m not debating what better or worst or preaching against perms, just having fun with my new found style.
I feel so much better knowing I’m not doing this alone! You go Kim!
mottie
Kim looks great…there’s nothing like the real thing…she looks good. I agree with the person that stated “the braids did nothing for her face”.
Rosalyn
Just when I didn’t think I could love Kim more, BANG-BANG, POW-POW…she hits us up with these beautiful coils AND the “for real” comments about “us” learning to be honest about decisions for “us”. Love, love, love me some Kim!
…and muahhhhhh to you, too, Afrobella, for gracing us with Kim and her interview! DTDT…do the dang thang! (I’m sorry, yall, it’s been that kind of week).
DL
Kim looks so cute! I just have a question for anyone that can answer (It was so great if Kim answered this question)… I love micro braids… How can someone keep them in on a continuous basis? I would eventually like to go natural and I always wondered how Kim kept micros in without any real damage to her own hair? I would love some tips because I would like to go that route… Micros while I’m transitioning. Thank you in advance :^)
Valarie
I love, love, love Kim Coles hair style, and color. It really looks nice on her. I desire to wear my hair like that too one day. The natural look is in, and more healthy. I wonder who designed her tee shirt? I am an artist who designs too. Just sayin. 🙂
Cynthia

Hi there would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images. Maybe you could space it out better?
