To be honest, I took terrible care of my teeth for far too long. I didn’t floss, I didn’t brush with the proper care. I needed an oral hygiene upgrade but first, I had to burn to learn, as we say in Trinidad. I thought I was doing OK, but I was doing the bare minimum and it caught up to me, to the tune of a $5000 dental bill. It was quite literally a painful and expensive lesson. Ever since then, I’ve been extra vigilant about my teeth and both proactive and protective of my oral health practices. Please learn from my mistakes.
Maybe you’re like me and money is tight so the dentist drops to the bottom of your things-to-do list. Believe me, I’ve been there. Invest in your dental health – make that dentist’s appointment to stay on top of things before they get out of control. If you know you’re not flossing enough or brushing regularly like you’re supposed to – it will catch up with you eventually. Trust. Invest the time and get tools and products to make the job easy and efficient. Here are some of my personal picks in toothbrushes, at-home tools and more!
My current toothbrush is the Oral B Pro 6000, and now there’s a newer, quite elegant model in rose gold. It promises to give me healthier gums and stronger teeth for life and comes with a travel case, Bluetooth connectivity and an app to enable more efficient teethbrushing. Sometimes it is TOO fancy for me. I don’t use the app and the Bluetooth part the way I should – note to self, get on that. I DO use it to thoroughly brush my teeth and it makes my mouth feel amazing.
My husband has never used an electric toothbrush before reviewing the Oral B Genius 8000 for me, and so far he is loving it. This brush is sleek and black and it uses position detection to help you make sure you brush every area for the perfect amount of time. Plus it comes with a smart travel case that charges your brush and your smartphone! So amazing. On a purely superficial note, I like the colors they come in – the rose gold and black combo makes for very considerate his and hers gift ideas for holiday or Valentine’s or Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
I haven’t tried it personally, but I am super intrigued by the Foreo Issa toothbrush. I’ve heard great things and I LOVE my Foreo Luna for skincare. The Foreo Issa has the same kinds of medical grade silicone bristles, and it holds a charge for a full 365 days. Pretty cool!
When it comes to flossing, I was totally falling down on the job. My dentist called me out on my last visit. He prefers straight up regular floss over dental picks (which I like). He says the curve of floss wrapped around your fingers does a better job of getting down between the crevices of your teeth. He also demonstrated this on a little dental model, and I was reluctantly forced to agree. My dentist also told me I had to get a Waterpik, and honestly it’s been lifechanging. Now I’d say my Waterpik is part of my essential at-home dental care, my mouth feels less clean without it.
You can’t go wrong with the classic Waterpik Water Flosser, especially if you’re brand new to the Waterpik concept. If you haven’t tried it before, know that water flossing is messy but worth the effort. You’ll get it the first time you position yourself over your sink and get your Waterpik on for the first time. Your mouth will feel so refreshed – just ask your dentist before trying it out, if you have sensitive gums.
The Waterpik itself is awesome, but it is a bulky device. For a smaller, sleeker version that works just as well, check out the Waterpik Sidekick – it’s great for travel and intended for packing up and going in your travel bag. Plus if you like to add mouthwash to your Waterpik, the Sidekick makes that incredibly easy – just add it to the open water container and get your rinse on! I’m a fan. Pro tip – I recommend a casual flossing pre-Waterpik, it truly makes a difference!
If you’re still using a regular toothbrush, you can still step up your at home oral care game. I’ve tried out some unique toothpastes that I would definitely recommend. Here they are!
Weleda natural salt toothpaste – made with sea salt, baking soda and a touch of peppermint oil. It’s gritty, salty, and makes my teeth feel so fresh and so clean
Kiss My Face – the brand you might more likely know for their skincare, also does oral care! Their toothpaste is a minty fresh and aloe based gel.
Dr. Bronner toothpaste – that’s right, Dr. Bronner makes toothpaste! It’s 70% organic and involves glycerine, aloe and baking soda. It comes in three flavors – peppermint, cinnamon and anise.
Those are some of the ways I’ve given myself an oral hygiene upgrade. Let me know your favorite products and tips in the comments below!
