If you’re familiar with celebrity hairstylists, then the name Ursula Stephen probably rings a bell! Ursula has blessed MANY celebrities with her magical hands, but she’s most famous as the woman responsible for Rihanna’s most notable hair colors and cuts. Edgy bob? That was Ursula. Stoplight red hair? Yup. Ursula. Now Ursula is working with Motions and I was offered the chance to interview her!
It’s always interesting interviewing celebrity stylists — my perception is always that they’ll know more about relaxed hair or weaves than natural hair. But Ursula offered helpful tips for bellas both natural and relaxed! And she was SO cool!
In this video interview, Ursula offers holiday hairstyle tips for natural hair (as well as tips for ALL hair), winter hair strategies and product recommendations from the Motions haircare line (I do have love for the CPR, I used that a LOT when I had relaxed hair and it helped when my hair was super damaged).
Ursula also offered tips on at home hair color (she says DON’T DO IT!) and makes predictions for hair trends in 2012.
I LOVED that Ursula was about more than just relaxed hair! Such a fun interview!
How will YOU be styling your hair for the holidays, bellas?

Great interview Patrice. I do agree with her about trying bold colors. Try a streak first and then go from there. I also like when she said “stay hungry” this is true in whatever your aspirations are. Thanks for the interview bella!

I agree! Great interview….and I loved what she said at the end about being “assertive and confident in your position”. I don’t here a lot of people give advice on what to do when you actually make it. People hire you because YOU are the professional, right?…so own it! 🙂

I stopped using Motions products once I became Natural. I my need to give the CPR treatment a try. I wouldn’t dare color my hair at home. Too much of a risk.

I love this interview, Afrobella. Ursula seems so down to earth and is a master of her craft; I wish she would have given more specific tips like hair routines for different seasons and what to look for in a great hairstylist like herself. Also, do the Motions products contain ingredients that aren’t good for natural/permed hair?

Great job on the interview, loved your choice of questions! How interesting to see the woman behind Rihanna’s trendsetting hairstyles. I’m not a fan of hers, but I’ve definitely noticed her hair lol. I always love seeing smart, competent, successful (black) women, so thank you for this interview!
