After a ridiculously long and debauched Saturday night at a local landmark bar, my hair stunk like an overflowing ashtray on Sunday morning. Not only did it smell like the Marlboro Man threw up on me, but my curls were crunchy and hard and knotty. Ick. I spent my Sunday afternoon in beauty treatment rehab, using fantastic recipes courtesy of my favorite curly hair guru, Motown Girl.
Just like your skin needs to be exfoliated, so does your scalp. I started out with an extra-sweet Scalp Scrub, before my shampoo and deep condition, then I combed through my tangles and followed that up with an apple cider vinegar rinse.
Motown Girl offers all of her fave ingredients (even brown sugar) for sale on From Nature With Love, a great site that offers natural ingredients.
My locks felt rejuvinated, but needed some extra TLC. So I slathered on a palm-sized portion of one of my favorite Carol’s Daughter products, Lisa’s Hair Elixir. The rosemary and peppermint scent made me feel refreshed, and my curls were soft, defined, and ready to face South Beach all over again!
For those of you who are aspiring mixtresses, note that the ingredients in Motown Girl’s Hair Growth Mixture are also key in Lisa’s Hair Elixir.
Also, what gives with Sephora? Their version of Jada’s Hair Recipe is different from the version on the Carol’s Daughter website. Strange. Either way, it appears that my beloved Lisa’s Hair Elixir is currently out of stock. It’s my favorite Carol’s Daughter product (that and the new Almond Cookie Body Butter, which is to die for!), and it’s well worth waiting for, I promise.

Hey Bella! I have a question for you: My hair is (I think) type 2B. It’s wavy and it has medium texture, but it just frizzes soooo bad. If it to dry naturally, it will be very soft, but just poof, and my waves are not defined AT ALL. They tend to be defined at the ends, but on top, it’s just straight, frizzy (is that even possible lol) hair. Do you think that if I try some of these products you post about they would be my waves some definition, or even hopefully CURL them? I would die of happiness. The only way for me to curl my hair is gel, and I hate using products. Will these products work on my hair type, or do you think they might be a little harsh for it?
Any help is appreciated. I’m just so tired of dead straight hair. Thanks! Love your blog =)
Liz
sorry typos: give my waves***

A product to try is Garnier Fructis Style Brilliant Shine Cream Gel. Bumble And bumble Grooming Creme is a good way way smooth poufy or frizzy hair(it can also be mixed with gel). Kerastase Elasto-Curl Creme can be used to define your waves. At your local Sally’s you can pick up Beyond The Zone Noodlehead that gives great results. leave in conditioner+Nexxus Phyto Organics the Art of Emphasis Redefining Gel is a good mix. Goldwell Liquid Gel+A/G Recoil is also good. i think if you mix a leave in conditioner with a curling serum or cream you can also achieve the look you want, if you want to ditch the gel for awhile.

Hi Coffy, thanks for all your advice! You seem to know your products very well lol After reading your comment today, I took a trip to Walmart (there is no Sallys in Norwalk, CT) and bought the Garnier Fructis product you recommended I should try. I will be performing a test run maybe tomorrow or the day after, and will let you know, if you care to know, how it goes! =]

Coffy to the rescue! Thanks so much for tackling this question, my friend. You always have your finger on the pulse of beauty products.
Liz, sorry I didn’t get to respond earlier, work’s been stressing me out! The top of my hair is kind of frizzy too, but because of my texture, my curls are much tighter than 2B. I do have a very good 2B friend, and I think these days she’s using Sunsilk and Activate. I definitely can say with confidence that Activate products work great with looser curls. But the “soft curls” product is still pretty gel-like.
Have you considered finger curling some of your limper or frizzier on-the-top parts in the morning? Whenever my hair looks “meh”, I finger-twirl some of my frizzy or out-of-control curls around my face to give my poofy style some definition and softness. But I will consult with my 2B friend and get back to you with more definitive advice.
Come back and tell us how Garnier worked for you!

Afrobella,
I don’t know HOW i came across your site but I am sure happy I did. You seem to have a remedy for all of my hair needs, I never in my life would have thought that I would use a “scalp scrub” actually, I never even heard of that before, But I plan on running and getting one after I leave this 9-5. It’s to the point now that if I don’t read about it on Afrobella I won’t use it!! Thank you sooooo much and keep up the good work!

I would like to know why Carol’s Daughter doesn’t have any products for people with locs.I may have missed it on the site but I never seem to be able to find any. I don’t want to put anything heavy on my locs because I hate that sticky feel. Any suggestions?
robin
I make natural hair products from shea butter (in addition to body butters, hair oil, natural shampoo, foot cream, scrubs, etc) and have had great reviews from folks that wear locs. My Daily Conditioning Hair Cream leaves your locs well groomed and extremely soft, not sticky. I wear my hair in a naturally curly/wavy fro and this hair cream is wonderful. Email me @ rdws@comcast.net for my brochure.
