Before I launch into this week’s Afrobella, Conya Doss, I want to thank Beauty, of the amazing music site Beauty N The Beat. She’s become my go-to source for the hottest new urban tracks. Thanks to her, I discovered this week’s Afrobella, the super-fierce and mega-talentd Conya Doss.
I’ll admit, the fro entranced me first. A quick flip through her online photo gallery revealed that it’s probably a wig in some of the publicity shots, but I think the photos of her with fans are of her real hair, which is GORGEOUS.
great interview on Honey Soul. She’s got amazing style, and she is a wonderful singer! Peep her MySpace page and listen to “Heaven Duet” and “Tell Me Why.” Her vibe is so old-school. She reminds me of Roberta Flack and Chaka Khan.
I found her bio to be most inspiring. Conya used to be better known as Miss Doss, when she taught underprivileged kids. I taught some college intro courses when I was doing my MFA and that was pretty much tough enough for me, so I have NOTHING but respect for real teachers who go into the community and make a difference.
When I was growing up, I had a teacher who definitely inspired me in terms of just being a strong, confident, natural beauty. (Shout out to Miss Stroud, the best history teacher a girl could ask for.) She made a big difference in the kind of woman I wanted to be, so I can only imagine how much her kids love Miss Doss and look up to her.
Hooray for Conya Doss and positive teacher role models everywhere!
I have yet to see her videos on VH1 Soul, but I sincerely hope that she makes it mainstream and we all start seeing and hearing much more of her. Her combination of undeniable talent, and beauty are inspiring to say the least.

Yay for Conya! She’s a Clevelander. My cousin has done her makeup before and says she’s a very nice lady. And she still teaches here in Cleveland. She’s truly slept on, I’d love to see her get her shine on.
Hot 105 used to blow her up big time back in the day (99′-00′) however, you know how the music bizness goes- here today, gone tomorrow. Nonetheless, she is truly talented and a musician true to her art form (not many singers can say that nowadays). You should hear her rendition of “You are my Starship”- SHE IS FIERCE!!!
By the way, can we get a spotlight on Rachelle Ferrell?- Another songstress virtuoso!!!

Sweet Trini, I was never in Miss Ruddell’s good books. Sad to say, very few teachers from BAHS made a real impact on my life. I loved Stroud, Thomas (contigo!), Jenkins, Mark, Ramsoondar-Gittens, the literature-teaching Mrs. Patrick… um, that might be it. But funny enough, when I go home to Trinidad now, the ones who were the meanest are the happiest to see me. It’s all “Patrice!! OMG, how are you!” And I’m like, bitch please. Ha!
I have all of Conya’s albums & they are all stellar. Her style is soulful, thoughtful & true all of which mainstream media is not ready for. I live in the Detroit area (Ypsilanti) & you never hear her music on the radio & how unfortunate especially since she is from Detroit.
I suggest that all pick up her music & support a real artist, wig or not this is one fine SISTA!!!
