I haven’t been this happy to see an interview with a seven or ten year old in… ever… but did you all see the Obama family on Access Hollywood? OMG, ADORABLE.
Malia (who is waaaaayy more collected than I was as a ten year old) sometimes thinks her dad is embarrassing, and Sasha doesn’t like to talk on the phone a lot. It was Malia’s birthday last Thursday and to celebrate, her family’s going to have a party for her this weekend, and they’ll all go to see Wall-E (which I am dying to see myself). Awww.
I’m not sure this will convince Baracknophobes that they are regular folk not to be feared. Some might even criticize the Obama’s decision to bring their little ones into the spotlight. But I must admit, it made this supporter smile.
Did you see the interview? What did you think? No worries if you missed it tonight — you can click here for a video clip. The four-part interview will continue to air on Access Hollywood Wednesday July 9th and Thursday July 10th.
** edited at 9 a.m. Wednesday — And wisely IMO, Obama’s not letting the kids do any more interviews. I haven’t had the fortitude to wade into the news reports and blog posts yet, but it seems there are accusations of him “pimping out” his children. Sigh. And it continues.

I’d be worried about any 10 year old that doesn’t find her father embarrassing.

I didn’t get to see the interview, but hs kids are so adorable and well spoken!! The Obama’s seem to have a very strong family relationship. I think they will defintely make it through the term(s) at the white house as a presidential family!
Maleficent
I saw it! When Malia reiterated that “you don’t shake a kid’s hand, Dad” I just about died. And swooned. And died again. Those little ladies are fabulous, even at 7 and 10.

I heard some people say they “too articulate for their ages”. Uhm both parents are double IVY, how do they think these kids would speak. sigh.
To me they seem like normal and smart kids with loving parents.

I love it!!! And, they have real lil’ black girl hairstyles, too. Love, love, love, love, love it!!!
Anonymiss
I really like that family. And I love Malia’s confidence.
It’s funny how Sandra Rose wants to lament about Malia sounding as mature as a 19-year-old but I can only imagine what she would’ve said if she were bashful and stared at her feet while talking to people.
Why is Sandra so extra?

I think the interview and they are beautiful. Honest, candid and real. Go Obama’s!
nikki
What they meant was that they “sounded too white”. I mean, come on. Kudos to the Obamas and their beautiful children. I love to see Black families. Obama will be here in VA tomorrow, I”m going to try to go..I’m so excited!!!
bella
Anonymiss, I didn’t see that until you included the links… good GRIEF! When I was 8, I was reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and I thought I was the smartest miss in the room. Too grown? I was very proud of that little girl last night. And of the whole family in general.
And I LOVE the Michelle Obama Watch blog! Gina’s doing big things!
UnalteredBeauty
She’s so well spoken and exudes confidence. Good for her. And might I add, I’m loving her cornrows. See, we blacks can wear styles and looks that are inherent to our community and still be respected.

I saw her on the news the other day and thought she was adorable. And I did see this morning that Barack (on Good Morning America) said he & his wife talked it over & no more TV appearances for the kids in that way. He said they got caught up in a family moment, but he doesn’t want them to be concerned w/cameras, TV, etc.
I just love them Obamas! (LOL!)
TXGirl
Nikki, hope you don’t mind me asking. I originally from the VA Metro area(MD,VA,DC) Where is this history making going to take place? That’s exciting.

I thought the interview was very nice and gave insight into the regular life of the Obamas. I was disappointed that Barack Obama felt that it was a mistake to show that side of himself, but a parent has to do what he thinks is best for his children.

It will be in Fairfax at Robinson High School.

I love the interview…Why not speak to the girls? There father is on the verge to run the country. WTH?? You can’t please people. I love that Malia and Sasha have OPINIONS, they have that right. Malia and the handshaken thing was too funny. And Sasha is the family comic with the talk too much hands. You see they have personalities and that they are funny, sweet, and warm. They are not the Bush Twins!! Matt Lauer is in my scope after he was interviewing Barack this morning about the Teran Missile Tests. At the end he basically blasted Barack for having the girls on Access Hollywood. I will never watch the Today Show again. YOU ARE AN ASS MATT LAUER!!
To the OBAMAS…Keep doing you!!
Get Togetha.
Wow.
The influence that the Obama’s will have over America will live on as a legacy. I am so PROUD of them. As individuals, a unit, and a family. I truly feel blessed to be living at this time right now. This is a larger than life destiny type thing.

Jamillah, I saw the Today show interview and I frankly think that I want my candidate, indeed any candidate to have to answer questions that are tough. The elections will be tough but the presidency will be tougher. I think Obama handled himself well especially regarding the family interview. If anything I would be more concerned with the very important issues that came before whether or not it’s appropriate to interview a candidate’s children.
(Aiee, nuclear weapons in Iran, and yay an economic stimulus for women.)
For the record, from what I saw of the interview, the kids look charming and the family as a whole is charming and I think it’s brilliant marketing. Until someone turns around and taints it. Let’s face it, probably more people are watching Access Hollywood and reading US than the New York Times and if you want votes you need to appeal to people across a wide range.

The really great thing about the foolishness that is Sandra Rose is that ALL of her comments basically told her that she was crazy! LOL
Amber
The interview was so cute and real. I have two girls around the same age as the Obama’s children and I love to see that they have the same talk as we have with our girls. Stop arguing, you are each others best friends. That made me laugh and made me feel like, we are not the only ones. And I also can’t stand when people say, “Your children are so well spoken.” What are OUR kids supposed to sound like? Anyway, I am so glad to see our community being shown in a positive light. I Love Black Love!!!!!
Eminar
I got goosebumps after watching the interview! The girls are adorable – especially the oldest one. She has her mom’s confidence and intellegence already. I love that all of America got a chance to see that side of Obama and his family.

I just saw the clip. I agree with Unaltered Beauty. Beautiful cornrows. Some of our people feel that you have to totally assimilate to be “accepted” but you really don’t. Wow, can you imagine what this will do for little black girls everywhere to see those two precious girls grow up as the first daughters? I have a 3 year old daughter and I am so excited about what this means. These are amazing times!
dettygirl
Love to see myself represented in the media. On a side note, my little one & I went to see WALL-E last night, and I didn’t think I would like it but I did. It captured both our attention from the beginning. It is so cute and with a great message too!
Kei
Obama’s children are adorable! And Malia is so intelligent and cute! It was nice to see them relaxing and enjoying spending time with each other. Of course the claws of the media will soon come out and they will try to rip the image apart, dissecting it in many bits and pieces. So, I agree with Obama’s decision to not let the girls do anymore interviews for a while, because there is no need for the children to be subjected to the harshness that the media can put out there.

Most people love children and we are all curious about the Obama’s children. The Clinton’s allowed Chelsea to speak in an interview so, I don’t understand why everyone is so bent out of shape that Obama let his childrren speak on camera. What the problem really is with him having let his children speak on camera is that now when they try to paint him as some beastly person, people can defer back to the video and say, “no, he’s s regular person, just like me.” That is the fear and therefore the catalyst for the negative responses. Obama rocks and I knew that his children would be bright and articulate….. They serve as an example as to what a black family truly is.
Ursula
Michelle and Obama need to protect their children from the limelight, but it was good to see the young girls. They are so confident and self assured. Overall, a near perfect picture of a lovely black family.
