This is the Angie Stone I love best.
She’s so real and strong and bad-ass in this video, with her fabulous fro, henna rinse, and leather skirt. “Brotha†is one of the best music videos out there in my opinion. Mahogany Soul is one of my favorite albums, and I’ve listened to Stone Hits at top volume every time I’ve taken a bath for about the last three months. (Somebody please tell me why “Twenty Dollars†isn’t on Stone Hits! I love that song. It totally should have been on her best of). I love me some Angie Stone. But dammit, she is pissing me off right about now.
This is the Angie Stone I can’t stand.
I’m gonna have to say the nay-no, my damie.
When I saw that she was going to be on this season of Celebrity Fit Club, I had a bad feeling. I don’t mind watching has-beens, train wrecks, and attention whores sweat and get yelled at by a rabid trainer, but not Angie. I feared for her soulful mystique. Turns out, I was right to worry.
I wanted Angie to be determined and push herself. I wanted her to surpass the judges’ expectations, like Erika Eleniak seems to be doing. Unfortunately, she’s disappointing her teammates, and at least one fan. Every time I hear her say something like, “I’m jogging on the treadmill. Mentally, I’m jogging on the treadmill at this point because I know now that I can do it without my heart failing;” I want to scream. I couldn’t stand to watch her struggle anymore, to watch her make excuse after pathetic excuse. It got so bad that I can hardly watch the show. I just read Rich’s hilarious recaps on VH1’s Celebreality blog.
As an aside, I also hate her hair on the show. What happened, Angie? Your natural locks made you so fierce and distinctive.
Lose the wig and let the fro grow, girl.
At the end of last week’s episode when Angie threatened to quit, I had a revelation. I realized that I get so angry at Angie because she is me. Or at least, she’s who I identify with the most. So when I think “Goddamn Angie, stop shifting blame,†I’m getting angry at myself for years of inactivity. When I want to shake her and say “Quit being so bloody stubborn,†I’ve been trying to use the momentum to peel myself off the couch and away from the television. Instead of rooting for Angie, I’m trying to use my frustration as a motivating tool.
When I went power walking this afternoon, I listened to Stone Hits on my iAudio. It looks like she might flake out in the next episode. It disappoints me, but I know where those feelings are coming from. I know how easy it can be to give up on an exercise routine. I hope Angie doesn’t give up on the show, I really do. I just want her to defy expectations, for me.
pam
Gurl, love, love, love Angie, not feelin her on Celebrity Whine Club. I dont watch it much, but omg, why did she keep going on about her heart. I cant imagine even VH-1 didnt get a medical clearance before letting her on. And your right, “She is her hair”. Fake hair, fake whine, she’s gotta be stronger than that.
Love your blog,
Pam
pt
Man you hit the nail on the Angie!!! I was thinking why was I so invested in Angie Stone’s triumph. Then you made it clear. We began the same weight. I have been whining in my own head, and it started to get on my nerves to hear her too. I too love the more natural Angie, but remember Angie still has hangups about her size, her skin color and the rejection she felt from DeAngelo, regarding her beauty. There is more going on there than we see, but its up to us all to recognize the disability we have and rise above it. Thanks for the reminder that I must face my own whiny Angie and move on forward with the weight loss, as well as other things/
Coffy
you know what, i felt the same thing about Angie, but i was reminded of an old saying, there is something about her i don’t like about me.
summer
thank you for this post. how frustrating is it to see someone you had admiration for end up acting like a whiny so-and-so? i am disappointed in her. period. for me, it is completely about her for I am not reminded of me. and you chose the PERFECT picture for capturing the essence of CFC Angie.
Nice blog you’ve got here. I believe I shall bookmark ya!

I don’t understand why Angie chose to go on this show and not make an effort. I pretty sure she saw previous episodes. Losing weight is not easy but you have to KNOW you can do it.
christine
I can totally relate, because I had been watching CFC because was on it. I was disspointed in her, because she whinsy all the time. When I look in my A.S. mirror I see me whining about my weight.
This is a great site
cammie
New to the site and LOOVE it!!
Okay, Angie’s attitude on this show is so lame. I mean it is excuse after excuse and it is very embarrasing to me. On a positive note though, my mom seen a clip of her on ET and says that she has lost a lot of weight so I don’t know you guys maybe she changed something around.
spacekitty
she seems 2 be really lazy and gives a sorry excuse for everything.
she’s embarressing herself.
but i guess you can’t hide the REAL YOU for too long.

I’m with you Bella, I had to stop watching CFC4 and its getting I bit over the top for me. I pray that Angie stop making excuses and get with the program..Lord know its hard enough to lose weight, let alone do it on national TV..You so hit it spot on..when we don’t like what we see in someone a lot of times its that same thing we don’t like in ourselves..I too have made excuses for not working out regularly and I’m sure if I had to stand before Harvey with them he’d be rippin’ me a new one too. Thanks as always for your wonderful insight.

people have to realize that alot of this is done for ratings and for tv.
on a LA radio station, angie explained that on the bicycle race, they changed the gears of her bike to make her go slower.. which made the whole uproar with the team
but Angie has other health problems that she didnt fully discuss on the show. she was exposed to some deadly chemical in her earlier years that she couldve sued for, but didnt bother.
but overall, like someone else said, she DID lose the weight.

Being overweight is sooo not sexy, cute, or healthy. Monique trys to act like being fat is cute, but let’s be honest ladies it’s not. Angie, get it together! She is too beautiful to be unhealthy
pt
Now why you have to go and add Monique to the mix? Some plus size women are very healthy and active, and thin folks are often unhealthy. Please lets give the size thing a break, especially if you don’t know the health of the person you are discussing. Besides beauty is in your positive attitude, not in portraying someone else’s ideal.
bow down
Thanks, pt. Cute has nothing to do with size.
I don’t have a TV and thus haven’t seen CFC, but speaking of disappointing hair, why did Essence straighten Leela James’s hair in their last issue?
pt
I agree bow down, why does Essence see fit to straighten everyone’s hair, and don’t get me started but why do all of the makeover shows feel the need to add some fake hair into our lovely black hair to make us stylish? What happened to the beautiful short cuts I see my sisters rocking every day? I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
beautiful&black
Let’s use some common sense here. The black community has a history of health problems associated with weight, diet, etc… Unfortunately, we continue to act as if being fat — oops, I meant “thick” is okay. Black women love to dress the fat up. Stop being lazy and exercise. I think we can agree that women should not be rail thin, BUT being overweight is not healthy, attractive, etc… Ladies, stop the madness and run a lap.
Camille
This is one of the best blogs! I’m gonna have to say the nay-no, my damie is so funny. You will definitely go in my favorites.
pt
Black and beautiful, while I agree in principle with exercising and such, do you not realize that every body is different? All of us are not supposed to be thin. Check yourself on the attitude and think for a minute…I’ll wait. Do you not know anyone who is larger than you that is not unfit, or unhealthy? If not you need to get out more I think. Any way, this could go on forever, and it will not change your mind. So be it. I’m done.
bella
Oooh, this is turning into a debate! I love that we’re discussing real issues instead of trashing someone’s outfit or calling each other names. Thanks for participating and commenting, y’all!
I have alot to say about weight and beauty. Also, I met and interviewed Mo’Nique. Although Afrobella is primarily a beauty product site, I’m going to bring the weight into it, I think. It’s something we all need to think about and be educated about. So ladies, keep your eyes peeled for an article about this obviously hot-button issue soon!
beautiful&black
I just stated that being overweight is unhealthy. Fact! That’s not debatable. I never said you should be rail thin. My mom had to lose weight quick because her pressure, health, etc… was declining. So, let’s not mince words. We’re talking about being overweight not a little chunky. Ova!
