Freebies, Contests, and Giveaways for You Product Junkies

by afrobella

Afrobella of the Week’s coming later, bellas, promise! Because Monday morning time is of the essence, I’m gonna kick off this week with some product news and follow ups.

You’ve probably heard all about Miss Jessie’s, and maybe you’ve been aching to try the products. There’s no time like the present, bellas! Order any 8oz, 12oz or 16oz Miss Jessie’s product, and you can receive a FREE 2oz Rapid Recovery and Curly Pudding Unscented deluxe sample (a $9 value!) while supplies last.

In my interview with Titi Branch, she discussed the debut of this product and described Rapid Recovery Treatment as “a deep treatment that we use in the salon. It’s great. It really helps to repair dry and split ends, and to bring moisture to your curly hair. Curly hair really looks best when it’s moisturized, conditioned, plump, and happy.”

Sounds like something I’ve been looking for! On the shelf, the 12oz Rapid Recovery Treatment is $48. But you can score a 20z sample for free if you make an online purchase from August 6 to August 13.

And for the many, many, many bellas who have contacted me to ask about the salon and Miko… I am not in regular contact with either of the Branch sisters, so I can’t comment on their personal affairs. But I do know that you can visit Find Miko to make an appointment with her yourself. Good luck, curly girlies!

(shout-out to Buzzology for reminding me about this).

And I know some of y’all are still salty after that Queen Latifah Cover Girl contest. It’s been months since the casting call, and seven beautiful bellas have been chosen to represent the Queen Collection. They’re all gorgeous, but I’m especially feeling Janelle and Nelly’s fly hair styles. Nelly, talk about owning your fro! Loving it, girl.

But maybe you were among the hundreds who didn’t get seen in the casting call, or you couldn’t make it to New York to enter in person. Maybe you know that you could create a better ad than the Cover Girl reps. No worries — until August 8 you can enter the CoverGirl Queen Collection “Star in a Queen Collection Ad” contest. Visit Every Woman is a Queen to upload your photo and Queen Collection ad. Between one and four winners chosen by a panel of judges will have their ad featured in an insert in the first 400,000 albums of Queen Latifah’s new album Trav’lin Light, as well as a copy of her new CD. And I’ve got some upcoming giveaway goodness of my own coming up later this week. So stay tuned! On that note, I gotta go to work.

Happy Monday!

    hi Bella,
I have a question for you. My mom currently has natural hair, but she refuses to wear it out, she always hides it using hair extensions (not weaves or wigs).
Another friend of mine also has natural hair but refuses to wear it out either, she has hers hidden in weaves.
I keep on asking them what the point is of having such beautiful hair and keep it hidden. Could you perhaps consider writing a post on some pretty natural hair styles I can point them too?

    Thanks!

Thanks Bella for letting us know of the promo!

I’ve been using Miss Jessie’s loyally since I did my big chop in August 2006. I know there are many who scoff at the price or chide the sisters for making a buck (or two or hundred-thousand), but I must say the Curly Pudding works really well on my hair. I’ve spread the word to my natural friends (both women AND men) about Miss Jessie’s products. It’s great that they now have the less expensive, smaller sizes for sample frenzy!

Once I read your post, I went to NaturallyCurly.com to place my order. Tip: in case you didn’t know about this site, NaturallyCurly sells Miss Jessies, DevaCurl , Mixed Chicks, and a bunch of other hard-to-find-in-corner-sto’s products. They don’t sell the Curlz line (yet). NaturallyCurly also honors Miss Jessie’s promotions. The real advantage to ordering through NaturallyCurly is they ship USPS Priority Mail (flat rate) — faster and more reliable in my experience — instead of UPS like Miss Jessie’s does.

This from the Miss Jessie’s website:

    Dear Miss Jessie’s Salon Patrons:

As you may already be aware, Miss Jessie’s announced the closure of The Salon effective July 2, 2007. The decision to close operations was a difficult one but part of an overall restructuring plan to focus on the wonderful products we deliver to help you manage your naturally curly, kinky and wavy hair. We want to thank all the patrons whose lives we have touched either directly or indirectly.

Should you have any questions at all please contact us at 718-852-2600.

    Sincerely,
    Titi Branch
    Managing Director

So…I guess bad news for the shop patrons but good news that the focus will now be solely on developing products.
I myself have never used the products mainly becuse they seem overpriced. The procedures used to achieve the curly looks seem time-consuming and awfully complicated just to achieve a curly style.
Also, frankly I was disappointed to find out that the silkener is just a milder type of relaxer. My own “recipe” of Infusium 23 Leave-In conditioner mixed with a little frizz serum gives me shiny, conditioned, frizz-free curls.
Yes…I know we all have different textures/thickness and no one product does the same for every head, but I just think there are cheaper alternatives if one is creative and does a little research.

Love your site – it is always so informative. I lucked up and got an appointment with Miko. I’ll send pictures. She’s very pricey $275 for the appointment. I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes.

For anyone in the NYC area, the Ricky’s store on 57th between 8th and 9th in Manhattan has an amazing range of products for the curly haired woman. Miss Jessies, Diva Curl, and so much more, plus you dont have to pay for shipping.

I would be excited about this if and only if that curly pudding actually worked for me. Glad it does well for others…

I ordered the Rapid Recovery Treatment and the Baby Buttercreme, with that purchase I received free 2 oz samples of Curly Pudding (unscented) and Rapid Recovery Treatment. Because of my impatience I paid for the 2 day shipping option and for so for a grand total of $100 bucks I want to give these products major kudos for softening and moisturizing my hair.

While I don’t know the number or category of my hair let’s just say my hair is thick yet each hair itself is fine, my ends tend toward cotton ball fuzziness with little baby corkscrews poking out at random intervals (I only get the corkscrews if I don’t comb my hair). No amount of any miracle product is going to bring out “curls” in my hair, it’s afro hair period.

What Rapid Recovery did was soften and moisturize my TWA without leaving the greasy oily feeling that all of my other product combinations have done. I used a heating cap with the treatment then after rinsing it out I rubbed in the Baby Buttercreme.

The result was a luscious, thick, soft, fragrant TWA, a few days later I decided to do 2 strand twists (I did not use any additional product I just sat and twisted on a whim while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy), the twist out was lovely and soft and thoroughly moisturized without oiliness. The combination of Rapid Recovery Treatment and Baby Buttercreme has resolved the dryness factor I had been fighting when using my own homemade concoctions or even other retail products. Note that I was having dryness even without using shampoo. Thanks to Miss Jessie’s for developing and offering such lovely products, I’m a satisfied customer.
Afrobella, thank you for all that you do – I have to check in with you every time I need more bella in my day!
