Shhh. Don’t tell anybody, but I used to have a little crush on Method Man back in the day. I’m talking back when he was just coming into his own and was still Wu Tang grimy, before the debacle that was Method and Red — possibly the wackest sitcom ever. (Meth would agree, I think).
But by the time that Jonell came out with Round and Round (from the How High soundtrack), my little thug crush on Meth had pretty much dissipated.
I still have mad respect for him as a rapper and an actor (he’s pretty good on The Wire, IMHO). He’s matured nicely, and I look forward to seeing him do more acting. Because as far as rappers turned actors go, Meth has far more range than Ice-T. (As a very regular Law and Order SVU fan, trust when I say that I’ve seen every shade of character Ice-T has to offer. Despite that, he’s got some of the funniest deadpan one-liners on television).
I had pretty much forgotten about How High, Round and Round, and Jonell until late one night when I was writing and falling asleep to VH1 Soul. I love moments like that — VH1 Soul is at its best late at night when it breaks out of the replayed segments and just seems to air random videos. I got a double dose of Method Man duets that night — the one you hear all the time, and this one-hit-wonder track that I’d totally forgotten about.
Jonell emerged on the scene in 2001. She released this one track, then seemed to disappear completely. I always liked her style, she was built like a real woman and had some hips on her. Plus, she was rocking cute little twists before everyone else was, and I loved her jazzy singing style.
I couldn’t find much about her current deal, if she’s coming out with an album, anything… But on her MySpace page, you can hear some new tracks, including Encore which features a Snoop Dogg cameo. I’m feeling the old school vibe of Amazing Love and Missin’ You. But even her MySpace page is lying fallow, the last login date is November 2006. Which begs the question, where you at, Jonell?
Round and Round is my throwback jam of the day. Enjoy!

I have a confession to make dating back to 11th grade. The place, Mr. Safreed’s English class. The assignment, to write a poem (or a short story, I don’t remember exactly). What I do remember, is that instead of making one up myself, I straight up plagerized word for word an entire Wu-Tang song from Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers. I received a B-.

I saw that video on VHI Soul the other night too and said…what happened to her? She was cute and could sing? I guess MJB, Brandy and Monica were the hot acts at the time.

Bella,
I was digging her style and flawless make-up. She kinda favors a darker-skinned Eve…what do you think?
Olivia
Jonell…where is that girl? I remember when that video came out, I enjoyed when the song came out, I love everything about that song, simple…even with Meth….hmmm…even with that glass eye…Meth’s a cutie

By the way, this is a little out of place for this post, but I’ve changed my opinion on Radiodread, the Reggae cover of Radiohead’s OK Computer. After several listens, I now really dig the Radiodread album.

Hey Bella, I’ve often wondered what happened to Jerzee Monet. “Most High” with DMX was and still is a favorite of mine. I loved that she was natural as well, but never heard from her after that one track. She might make for a good throwback jam one of these days…
