Latifah, that is!
Y’all already know how much I love Queen Latifah.
She’s transformed from duckling in a dashiki to elegant red carpet diva swan. She makes a perfect and lovely Cover Girl.
But now, Queen Latifah and Cover Girl are looking for someone to ascend to the throne, and they’re seeking a regular woman for a change! No more of this celebrity model stuff, Cover Girl is celebrating the real.
They’ll be holding a casting call in New York City on Monday January 29 at the BB King Blues Club & Grill (237 West 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues) from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (But if you’re really ’bout it, you’ll get there when the line forms at 10:00 a.m.)
In their efforts to represent all shades of beautiful, women of color — Latinas, African Americans, Samoans, and every ethnicity in between are invited to work it model-style in front of a panel of judges (including Queen Latifah herself)!
“Contestants will be asked to share their story as to how they have achieved both inner and outer beauty – whether it was through a recent accomplishment, community service, overcoming an obstacle, or standing up for something they were passionate about,” the press release adds.
So bellas from ages 18 to 48, this could be your big break! If you attend the event, please let me know how it goes.

Dang it! I wanna go try out. I would love to be a cover girl. I think my biggest transition was killing the perms and I stop getting weaves and extension and embraced my hair. I love my locs and I think they are a symbol of me accepting my natural self.

I would have loved to try-out myself. I love make up! But Im in VA in college. :o( They should have had nationwide tryouts.
I went to this casting call and i must say I WILL NEVER EVER EVER BUY COVER GIRL EVER AGAIN!!!!
Here is what went down:
We spent over 6 hours in the mind numbing, hypothermia inducing cold. Waiting in line outside of BB Kings. Queen Latifah arrived late and left about two hours later at 1pm. Additionally it was later revealed that special blue tickets had been given out to models by their modeling agencies and they were allowed to enter before the ladies waiting in line. Despite the instructions that said to form a line at 10am, apparently some people had arrived earlier that morning and had also been given blue tickets if the appeared “pretty” by the security guards and were also allowed to enter. All in all 250 blue tickets were given out unbeknownst to ladies in line. The line stretched down the street and wrapped around the block.
After waiting in line for for about 6 hours they made an announcement (to the people in the front only) that only the individuals with blue tickets would be allowed in. A short time later they called the police to force people to leave and “escort” all the women away like they were common criminals.
I don’t understand why Cover Girl organization nor Queen Latifah would organize a spectacle like this. It was so unorganized and all in all a horrible experience. . . I will never forget being shoved at by the White associate from covergirl with a police officer telling us that “due to time constraints” you all need to go home. I know for a fact that very few young ladies standing in line were ever seen. Several of the ladies with me had to go see a physician myself included for hypothermia.
Why couldn’t they have announced this earlier?? Why couldn’t they have originally just said — the first 250 people are getting an opportunity the rest of you leave? Why did they make us stand out there till 3:30? Why was this event happening at such a small venue like BB Kings that forced people to be out in the cold? Why were we herded like cattle? Why did they have to bring in the police to treat us like criminals?? Why did they lie?
I guess if I wait for CoverGirl or Queen Latifah to give me the answers I would quite literally still be standing in the cold.
i will never buy cover girl again i second what the girl in front of me had to say. we stood in line for soooo long and no one i mean no would even give us the repect to say fools go home. if kemi you reading this post here is the number to call covergirl 212-485-6800. I saw Queen Latifah on the Larry King show the other night making a plug for her book and it seems that the gist of it is that and I quote “Every woman is a queen and deserves to be treated as one.” Uh, what? Meaning she should be waited on hand and foot by servants, maids and butlers? That she should live in bourgeois decadence never caring how her subjects live in squalor? Because that’s truly what royalty is all about. How about instead “Every woman is a woman and deserves to be treated with respect as a woman, just as every man is a man and deserves to be treated with respect as a man.” But I guess that doesn’t have the gimmicky sloganeering ring to it that Latifah’s statement does.
I’m sorry but it just irks me that some people still have this backwards, feudalistic mindset that idolizes royalty and wealth. This is 2010. There shouldn’t even BE any queens or kings in existence anymore. Idolizing royalty is to keep a mindset that gets in the way of progress. She’s famous enough now that if she just went by Latifah instead of Queen Latifah everyone this side of Mars would still know who she is so how about it Latifah? Can you drop the “Queen” from your name and get down here with the commoners who work for a living in the hot non-air-conditioned struggles of the poor? How about using that star power and gravitas to push for real wealth redistribution in this country instead of calling yourself a queen and helping legitimize an oppressive status quo?
