Double dutch is an internationally beloved activity, a childhood rite of passage for so many. I remember watching Sesame Street as a kid and loving the jump rope contest they featured as a segment in the 80’s. Who remembers this?
I wanted to be one of those little girls so much! But unfortunately I never had the skills. If I tried to double dutch, it’d pretty much go like this.

For those with the dexterity and skill, double dutch is more than just a childhood game. It can be real exercise, that also works on an emotional and spiritual level to lift you and take you back to a more innocent time in your life. I think double dutch requires a measure of athleticism and grace. For those of you who are ready to jump on it, then you need to know about Double Dutch Aerobics.

I had the opportunity to catch up with Michelle and ask her a few questions about DDA and what the mission and message was. Here goes!
Afrobella : What does double dutch mean to you?Why is this your chosen medium of exercise?
Michelle Clark, Double Dutch Aerobics: I fell in love with double dutch when I was 4 years old. I jumped in the streets of Brooklyn, New York and then professionally on a team called the Jammin’ Jumpers. My husband who I also love, partnered with me on this journey and together we are building our brand, making it what it is today. We chose this medium because, we love what we do and when you do what love, especially with the person you love, you will never work or workout a day in you life. 🙂 There is nothing like Double Dutch Aerobics anywhere. Its the only exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise.
Afrobella: What do you hope attendees will get out of the Double Dutch Aerobics experience?
Michelle Clark, Double Dutch Aerobics: We want people to be excited about working out and Double Dutch Aerobics is a perfect blend of fun and fitness with a splash of nostalgia. During a Double Dutch Aerobics class you’ll experience lots of smiles and high fives, while getting a good sweat and a great workout. By the end of the 1hr class, you’ve burned between 500-700 calories. Now you might be sore the next day, but you can’t wait to come back and do it again 🙂 Double Dutch Aerobics is addictive!
Afrobella: What’s next for Double Dutch Aerobics? Is there a DVD/at home workout we can do or buy?
Michelle Clark, Double Dutch Aerobics: Although we are based in NYC and Atlanta, our next move is to expand! Our goal is to certify more teachers, so that Double Dutch Aerobics can be offered in every city all over the country. We are currently touring around the country teaching classes and promoting our brand to people from other cities. We want everyone to experience what Double Dutch Aerobics is all about.
