The 4th quarter of the year is a time for reflection and projection. We look back on what we’ve experienced and anticipate future possibilities to come. It’s no different in the beauty space – this is the season for recognizing the developments we have enjoyed and admired the most. 2016 has been a banner year for the beauty biz, and Refinery29 is recognizing that with their annual Beauty Innovator Awards, “a one-of-a-kind celebration honoring the trailblazers and risktakers breaking away from the beauty status quo.”
Right on time and I am totally into it, because their approach is so unique and refreshing and relatable and NOW. It’s about variety, diversity, and beauty as self expression. And YOU can vote for your faves immediately – click here!
The Beauty Innovator Awards tackles product categories in a fun, fresh way and offers us a chance to give a shout out and celebration to the folks who are really shaking things up and making a difference in this industry. The judges offer a range of perspectives and variety across professions, from industry insiders and makeup artists to vloggers and my fave sister singers Chloe x Halle!
In my opinion, one of the most major developments in the beauty industry today has been the rise of online brands, and the range of product developments that has ushered in. Social media has given rise to a new wave of beauty influencers and beauty brands, fueled by trend and word of mouth marketing. To that end, the R29 Beauty Innovator Awards presents some questions worth considering, like “The Best New Under-$25 Buy” and “The Moisturizer That’s So Good, It Should Be Illegal.” I can’t wait to see who will win categories like “Hairstylist Whose Instagram We Can’t Stop Stalking” and “Makeup Artist We Most Want To Touch Our Faces” (I have personal picks in both categories, hoping they make it!)
There’s a lot of edge and some hot product suggestions hiding in these categories. For example, the “If Rainbow Brite Were a Club Kid, She’d Wear These” category includes some of my longtime favorite brands, like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (that legendary Lip Tar changed the game), Dose of Colors, NYX and Anastasia Beverly Hills in hot colors I haven’t tried before that are now totally on my radar (hello, Chocolate Wasted). Same with the “Take It Off, Take It All Off” Cleanser” category – the nominees are all calling my name to try them. So many brands I’ve heard great things about!

I love that they didn’t just go for the standard categories like ‘best moisturizer’ or ‘longest wearing foundation’ or something.
