A few weeks ago I participated in a special photo shoot and couldn’t breathe a word to any of my friends about it. And now the secret’s out! Did you get to see Splash, the brand new Chicago Sun-Times magazine last Sunday? Cause I’m totally in it, right in the middle of the shot!
Photo by MARIA PONCE ~ FOR SPLASH
I love this photo! Or as my husband calls it, “the only time you’ve ever used a ladder.” Shade! (But he’s kinda right).
Who else is in the shot with me? From left: Jared Hatch, Chicago Editor, Racked.com, Rebecca Taras, Chicago Editor, Refinery29.com, yours truly hayyyyy, Dana Weiss, Creator, Possessionista.com, D. Graham Kostic, Host and Creative & Editorial Director, GlossedandFound.com.
The shoot took place at the photographer’s amazingly dope photo studio on the total opposite end of Chicago for me – such a cool and unexpected neighborhood! And then Dana of Possessionista gave me a ride to the el and I had to sit on my hands and wait for the exciting news to drop.. And I was in New York for fashion week when the issue came out, so I didn’t even see it until Tuesday.
I’ve been living in Chicago for three years now and it’s SO wonderful to finally be getting recognition from the local mainstream media! The blogging scene here is lovely but it can be quite cliquey and a bit divided. So I really loved the SunTimes goal of gathering a diverse crop of us – some working for a larger media entity, some creators of their own platform, all fabulous and friendly and genuinely interesting. I really loved spending time with my ladder twin Graham (he’s @GlossedandFound and he’s a riot!) and it was so nice to finally meet @Possessionista who is nothing but sweet on Twitter and we’ve been friends there for a minute. Does she not look exactly like Demi Moore + Sarah Jessica Parker? Even more so in person, with glossy, gorgeous hair and a dazzling smile. Such a sweetheart!
There’s a little video of our shoot here, but most of my quotes apparently didn’t make the final cut:
And there’s a wee feature of our favorite accessories here, which unfortunately couldn’t include everything I brought and also truncated the explanation of the accessory they DID feature of mine…I’d like the record to show that’s a vintage silk Diane Von Furstenberg scarf I found in the pocket of a winter coat that I purchased at Redress/NYC (when there was a store in Brooklyn). I guess that’s the difference between a newspaper and a blog – there’s nobody to tell me what to edit out! So here are ALL my accessory picks, just so you know what I brought with me!
On that very DVF scarf, from left:

Kanupriya axe ring from Max & Chloe
Hopi studs from Peace Images
Ankara hoops by Quelly Rue Designs
MAC’s new pro lip palette in 6 Select Plums
Milani Crystal Gloss in sheer dark honey
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned
All of My Purple Life (you know I had to throw it in there)!
And yes, that is a classic photo phone shot. Sorry.
Thanks again to the Chicago Sun-Times for featuring us in the premiere edition of Splash. I’m beyond proud to represent as one of Chicago’s best style bloggers!

Congratulations! The success keeps building for you and you deserve every bit of it. I also love seeing you this comfortable in front of the camera and holding down the center of the photograph!

First I want to say congratulations for this achievement. Second, I think the producers would have benefited from mentioning your comments in the video. Perhaps next time they will, because I think each person in the video needed to personally express their ideas. Third, I understand the political ramifications in a city like Chicago for being chosen for such a spread especially when there are so many minority bloggers in the city. Being a transplant to a new city is hard for anyone and for you to achieve this recognition may be difficult for some of your colleagues. But you know what? This is world of abundance and there is room for everyone at the top. I hope you enjoy your success and I wish the very best for you in dealing with the highs and the lows of achievement. Keep your head high and know that your hard work and dedication is its best reward. I’m so happy for you and all the other bloggers out there who show up and do the work. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! You deserve this.
Second of all, as Chicago was my prior home, I’ve got to give it up to the Chicago Sun Times.
Also, red looks great on you and love the hair.
