When I was a little girl, my parents became small business owners. I believe I was 8 or 9 when my parents opened their store. It was called Lounging, and instead of the typical mannequins posing in the store window, we had a chaise lounge. My dad was involved of course…but it was my mom’s baby. Lounging was a store by women for women – my aunts and sister all put in work stocking the boutique and running the cash register, and our store was filled with items designed to make women feel relaxed and sensual – caftans and negligees, and the kind of lingerie that was sexy – but not TOO sexy. I was too young to help, but I learned so much by watching. I got to learn that running your own business and building your own dreams takes dedication and drive.
My mom’s store didn’t last long – just 3 years – but the experience made an indelible impression on me. I have so much admiration and respect for small business owners, especially women who step out in faith to follow an entrepreneurial path. So when I learned about National Women’s Business Week and the Tory Burch Foundation, I was like YES! I wish this was the kind of initiative and attitude that was around back when Mama Bella was doing her thing!
From the BPW Foundation: “There are 7.2 million majority-owned, privately-held, women-owned businesses in the United States. These firms employ 7.3 million people and generate $1.1 trillion in sales. Only twenty years ago it was still legal to require a woman to have a male co-signer before receiving a business loan.” National Women’s Business Week is all about shining a light on women entrepreneurs and revealing the resources available to them. And the Tory Burch Foundation supports women entrepreneurs through donations, and provides mentors, advocates and a sounding board for up and coming business owners.
Tory Burch designed clothes and accessories to support the cause – if you’re down to support the cause, check out the Tory Burch Foundation collection here. I love the silk scarf you see in the photo above, but the World Charm necklace is calling my name!
