He’s Making a List, and Checking It Twice

by afrobella

In case you were wondering, this is what terrible two looks like. Here’s hoping my niece, Little Afrobella Dominique, can still make the “nice” list after this incident!

She LOVES makeup, and this photo was taken immediately after she got all up in my Aunty Opal’s makeup bag. She got lipstick and foundation all over. But hey – she’s starting to glam it up early!

Anyone know of any safe-for-kids makeup playsets I could get her for Christmas, so I can keep her away from my aunt’s supply?

I don’t know, but for the love of God, DON’T get her the Barbie make-up/nail kit. I had one of those as a kid and between the PINK (and I mean pink) lipstick and the CHALKY nail polish, I was highly disappointed.

A girl’s got to have standards, even if she hasn’t reached the double digits yet!!

    omg…TOO freakin’ CUTE!

My first reaction was “what happened to her face!”, but then I read on! lol

Little cutie! Well, my kids would LOVE a full makeup kit (they have inherited grandma’s love of makeup — they even wet washable crayons and apply eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish, etc.), but until then, they have been very happy with some sparkly lip gloss, especially anything Hello Kitty in a tube. They really enjoyed it when they were 2 and 3, opening the tube, applying the gloss, closing the tube, opening the tube, applying the gloss, closing the tube, etc. :-)) If you can get something with a feathery handle, so much the better. It’s less messy than anything else. Maybe she’d be satisfied with a few tubes of sparkle in her very own zippered (and little bellas love zippers) purse.

Well at least you can be thankful that she didn’t find the scissors and decide on a new do too! LOL Try out Sephora’s girls line. I get that kind of stuff for my 9YO all the time.

Oh my goodness, she’s just the cutest little thing. Is this her I sawwy Auntie face? You can’t be mad at her for more than a second. And somehow, someway, little girls make it into that makeup. That’s the last thing I think about baby proofing when I have mini visitors. And twice both my nieces have done the same thing when they were around that age and they’re 5 years apart.

She is sooooo cute…and my, how she’s grown up! I agree with apb1172…the Sephora Girls Line is a great choice.

Haha! That’s cute and hilarious. I found this Ice Cream Kit make-up from Pupa at CosmeticMall.com. It’s in the Kids & Teens section: http://www.cosmeticmall.com/product_detail.aspx?product_id=5786&nav_mode=&category_id=47&brand_category_id=0&search=

It looks like it would be fun to play with although it also looks…DELICIOUS! LOL! Or you can give her those LipSmacker chapsticks that come in candy & soda flavors. I wear the Dr. Pepper one all the time and my little cousins always try to steal it from me. So apparently kids like ’em.

Sorry bella, no advice on kids makeup, I have all boys. I had to stop in and giggle at little bella (so precious). About two years ago, my twins smeared my M.A.C. lipstick into my carpet, not a smudge on them. I probably would have lauged if it were on them instead of in my carpet. lol have a great weekend!!

Your niece is so adorable. My sister had the same problem with one of my nieces so last christmas I venture to the most teenie bopper store I’ve ever seen it was quite an experience. Not sure if it’s in your neck of town but you can also shop online http://www.clublibbylu.com/. BTW I love your work please continue to feed us with the knowledge.

Oh My! Bella, how do you keep from spoiling her, she really makes it beautiful! I remember I use to carry my kaboodle case around when I was younger.

I really like LimitedToo’s line of little girl things: http://www.limitedtoo.com/category/Girl_Stuff?page=all. They are very sparkly and pretty. My particular favorite is this:http://www.limitedtoo.com/detail/1277293 & this: http://www.limitedtoo.com/detail/1277290, & this: http://www.lillianvernon.com/catalog/product_display.jsp?pdId=4220. Another thing you can do is head on over to target and purchase an inexpenive makeup box or pouch, decorate it with girly stickers like hearts and ice cream cones, etc.& fill it up with low priced items like emory boards, light color nail polish, lip gloss, lotion, compact mirror, etc. Also, here is a makeup case that has an image of an african-american girl: http://www.algstore.com/items/80132-w.htm. Happy Shopping Bella! Great Post!

This is too funny. It reminds me of the time when I got in my Mom’s makeup bag, and ended up with a ton of stuff on my face too. I was going around telling my Mom “kissy, kissy”. She said she was mad, but was cracking up to much to hand out a punishment.

I have no clue about makeup for girls because I have teenage boys. I would look for cosmetics that are deemed safe of any harmful ingredients. I know there’s a lot of good lip glosses and stains that could be used as a blush out there that would look cute on your niece. You may also be interedted in getting her a nice perfume or body spray too (something safe of course).

Check with her mama before you buy! I know some people have issues about this. But maybe just load her up with a safe-if-eaten (Burt’s Bees?, anything at Whole Foods?) lipbalm with no color and a fancy cosmetic case. At that age, she may well insist on going out in public all prettified with her new stuff, and this way she still can.

She looks so darned guilty, lol, but cute as a button. Sorry no recs on the makeup I don’t really wear it as an adult lol.

Ok, well you can’t deny this cutie pie is adorable…but am I the only one who has some issues with little girls and make-up kits? Why do we have to socialize them at such a young age to paint their lips and face to be more “beautiful”. I know, I know girls just wanna have fun, but I think these subtle messages impact girls and women. Having said this, I have to admit that this girl is ADORABLE:)

  29. bella

I feel you, Liz – she’s just TWO! So young, and so fascinated, so transfixed by watching her mom, grandma, and aunties put on makeup. I don’t recall being as into makeup as young as that, she is definitely a little princess from early. Perhaps she’ll go through a tomboy phase later on?

  30. Elana

Oh my! Those big eyes, those cheeks! Cutie-patootie –in the words of Rosie. My niece who is just pushing 2 walks around with her grandma’s lotion, and carries her purse on her forearm like a little ‘ol lady. Even though I don’t want her to grow up so fast — which I’m sure you can relate to — it’s so cute. And it makes me excited that when she’s older…I think I found myself a great shopping partner! Whoo wee!

I will co-sign with getting her something safe and colorless or with very sheer color for her lips (like Burt’s Bees, that clear very shiny gloss that’s been in the Avon catalog for ages (forgot the name), or the flavored, colorless lip balms to play around with or go out with. My little niece is about that age and she enjoys at home “spa days” with her auntie. I let her pick out what color polish she wants and I paint her toenails (I don’t like to put it on her fingers because kids still have their hands in their mouths quite a bit). I agree about not letting the little ones grow up to fast, but if she’s just in the house and playing dress up, it’s fine.

i agree with maggie, liz and niki…
shes only two! i think some flavored chapstick or something is harmless enough, but she really doesnt need to have makeup kits or perfume spritzes and cosmetic bags at this age. why introduce her to these products that she most obviously doesnt need? (there are lots of other “fun” things for girls to enjoy, no?)
i would say get her something like smackers (check the label first, but i first used it around lowerschool i think) and call it a day.
little girls dont need makeup to be little bellas!
