My Afrobella of the Week needed more cookin’ in the kitchen. This is a woman I have a whole lot of respect for, so I want to come correct. And I want her post to kick off the week right, so I’m making the editorial decision to hold off on Afrobella of the Week this week. I say better it’s written well all the way through, than prepared and posted in haste. Actually, recently someone suggested to me that I change it to Afrobella of the Month. Any views on that, bellas?
On to the newness — You’re starving for some new music. But the existing landscape of the musical scene is so stale, you continually find yourself turning back to the classic soul tracks of the sixties and seventies. Look no further — I have the perfect new album for you that brings the sounds of the present and the past together in one fantastic blend.
Former Afrobella of the Week, Sharon Jones has just dropped her latest album, 100 Days, 100 Nights. It’s beyond tight. I’m loving it!
It’s the kind of groovy, mellow album that you can listen to all the way through without skipping a track. Don’t believe me? The album is being screened in its entirety on AOL Spinner so you can listen for yourself.
If you enjoy Amy Winehouse but you’re sick of watching her eclipse her talent with shocking celebrity stunts, you’ll dig Miss Sharon even more. She’s worked hard to get where she is today, and she truly appreciates her fans. The Dap-Tones agree, as you’ll discover in this great MTV interview. Click here to check out a little video of Sharon and the Dap-Kings recording in the Dap-Studio. It kicks off with her combing out her fro, and features a little acapella singing towards the end. To hear Sharon’s version of Bob Marley’s It Hurts to Be Alone, click here for the Entertainment Weekly exclusive.
The title track is my favorite! 100 Days, 100 Nights makes great use of Sharon’s sweet, strong voice, and that horn section that I love so much. You need it in your life. Click here to enjoy it fully before you go on and buy the woman’s album. And if you love authentic soul, you should support her! It just dropped yesterday, so clicky click to get it on Amazon, and while you’re at it, show Sharon some love by adding her to your MySpace friends.
The group will be touring the US, Canada, and Europe, so check out Brooklyn Vegan for tour dates. It breaks my heart that they’re not coming to Miami. Oh well — I still have her killer new album to comfort me. And in case you’re wondering what kind of live performance this petite dynamo puts on, check out this video of her performing on popular French television show Canal Plus.
Sharon rocks!

Wooooh!….Sharon’s sound is serious! I had goosebumps……the head was boppin and all that! Thanks for the tip on another fantastic soul-diva. I know it’s not a word but it’s the best way to describe her. 🙂
Mae B.
Girl you have good taste, I was checking her out. She is amazing.

Hey Bella,
about doing Afrobella of the month rather than the week..that’s cool if it feels right to you. However, I feel like we have so many wonderful “Afrobellas” you could celebrate 1 Bella a week and still make it fab. If you really want to put a twist on it….let’s see a Bello, every now and again…smile. By the way this Sharon Jones, is the “it” and I mean that…I will definitely pick up this c.d.( I’m sold on…”Nobody’s Baby”). I always say this, but it’s true …I’m glad I came across this site..I learn so many new things from you (the readers) and music is at the top of the list….have a “magical” day….

I just got on to them a month or so ago..love it. 🙂 BTW I wouldn’t mind if you did an afrobella of the month.

It is written. The main thing with Afrobella of the Week is, it involves SO much research. And I do all of this myself, and I always want it to be a joy, not a burden. So if I quit doing Afrobella of the Week, I will still always pay tribute to a bella (or bello, lol) every week. =)

Ha Bella,
Always putting us on to new sounds. I learned about Winehouse and Feist here. More new music, please.

Yeah! I saw this on MTV News–this band is amazing and Sharon Jones’ fortitude is so inspirational. Even when record execs were telling her she was too dark, too old, not pretty enough, etc. etc. she still kept doing what she loved. I hope this album sells big because she deserves it.

I vote for an Afrobella once a month. Once a week is too labor intensive AND you might end up pulling one of those Adolf Hilter Times cover things. You know times almost up and you pick Mariah on accident (she’s not going to come due until at least 2030 after she kills herself in some cliched way.)
I love Sharon. I love her nonairbrushed music and look. I saw her album at Amoeba. I’m going to make my current boy buy it for me.

TheBeautifulOne
This is real music. That band is tigher than an African drum!

I love Sharon and the Dap Kings!! I saw them live in Brooklyn about 3 years ago for my birthday and got instantly hooked! Sharon is pure fire LIVE!! She is all energy for her complete set. Invites the audience to the stage with her to jam and groove. Loads of fun and the music is incredible. I love her song “My Man is a Mean Man”. She really worth seeing LIVE, seriously.

About having Afrobella of the week, if it feels right to do it once a month, I say cool. But maybe it’s time to have a contributor that can do it once a week on your behalf. Your blog is so massive and you work full time (I think). So that maybe it’s time to delegate. No need bother with stress.
Sharon does rock! I saw her on Good Morning America earlier last month. Good post!

Alright so I have been checking out these of government grants internet sites and I would really like to hear about all your thoughts on them…
Do they actually work?
Do you know personally somebody that got one?
I have been planning a article series about the government training grants, and could use all of the assistance I receive!
