Some pretty exciting things have been happening ’round here, and that means increased exposure for Afrobella.
This Saturday I was interviewed for an XM Satellite radio program called Cocoa Mode, and it was a fun, interesting chat about Spring beauty and what that means for women of color. I’m hoping to get some audio soon to share with you all! Cocoa Mode airs every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm EST on The Power, XM Channel 169.
Also, I’m honored to be featured in this month’s YMIB.com issue! For those of you who aren’t already familiar with this positive and awesome online magazine, YMIB stands for You Make It Beautiful, and the site is all about black beauty, health, creative writing, style, entertainment, culture, politics… they even have sections dedicated to family life and arts and crafts. It’s a great site and I am really excited about being featured.
Thank you, bellas!

That is a great q&a!
Thanks so much for always providing great tips. I took your tip on the Curls products and I am in luuuuve!
Keep up the great work.

I really enjoyed the interview. I think that it is very important to stress that black women do not have to seek white women’s styles or common attributes to be beautiful. I know some people who only say my hair is nice if it is straight- no other style will do it for them. However, it doesn’t bother me because I love rocking natural styles.

Congratulations!
Nice Interview.

Great interview, and great to see you – the original Afrobella! I’m so glad you drove home the point about natural beauty several times. I think there’s a huge denial in our culture about how something as simple as beauty regimens can demonstrate self hatred. A bigger deconstruction would be a fun read, if you examined how much responsibility belongs to blacks, whites, western ideals, male patriarchy, etc. I often think of Diana Ross and Chaka Khan, 2 glamorous performers who obviously supplement their look with extra hair. However, their aesthetic has always been to choose a look that still lets them appear to be black women. I can’t ever remember them trying to rock a silky straight style for an extended length of time.

You are so pretty! Congrats on another great interview!
