Do any of you remember this song?
The first time I saw “Ghetto Superstar” was back in the day on BET. It must have been 1996, because I distinctly remember wearing my high school uniform. The video was so fresh and funky and unusual; I was psyched to see what this Joi chick was going to be coming out with next.
I wanted to buy her album, Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome, but it was never officially released. Then Mya and Pras (and let’s not forget the ODB) came out with their “Ghetto Superstar,” and Joi basically disappeared from the mainstream scene.
She’s still out there doing her indie thing, and on her official website, you can hear the new stuff she’s recording. I still like her style, and I’m all about supporting sistas who express themselves and operate outside the box.
Ghetto Superstar is my jam of the day!

Her album The Pendulum Vibe is hot. Sunshine and the Rain, Freedom, Adoramus te christe… just great songs and the CD shows her range. She should be way bigger than she is today.

Her latest “Tennessee Slim Is The Bomb” is on my top 10 for 2006.

I was just about to mention “Tennessee Slim Is The Bomb”! Great album from an underated talent. I think a lot of people were/ae baffled by her because she doesn’t necessarily fit in with the R&B mainstream. Most people know her from when she was married to Big Gipp from the Goodie Mob and when she replaced Dawn Robinson in Lucy Pearl, but little else. I think people that had saw lots of her in magazines but never heard her sing didn’t understand her appeal. Sista-girl can BLOW, but she’s not a traditional R&B singer.

All her albums are the bomb. Her most commerically successful was Star Kitty’s Revenge. If has the song “Lick” on it which was featured in that Vin Diesel movie.

I love JOI, she has a song about her father called “Jefferson St. Joe”. It’s a Beautiful song.
Lick and Dance with Yesterday are my favs.
P.S. Never heard this song….

Somehow I missed this song. I heard the Mya and Pras (and in my opinion,) overplayed version. This one is a a lot better.
Angry Black
I got the bootleg of Amoeba. That song “You Turn Me On” stays in heavy rotation to this day.

So happy Friday y’all… I had a post all written and ready to go, and my internet was down when I woke up this morning. There were power and phone service trucks all over my neighborhood, busy laying lines and doing all kinds of stuff. I can’t post from work, so I sincerely hope to be able to post something new over the weekend. Bear with me!

Hey Bella!
Talk about an eccentric diva, Joi certainly fit the bill! I love her and her style. I gotta check out her new material.
